Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design

The Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design) is a Germany university founded in 1992 by Professor Heinrich Klotz, who also founded its sister institution, the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie). The university teaching and research focuses on new media and media art. Departments include communication design, product design, set and stage design, exhibition design, media art, sound, film, video, digital art, 3D animation, media theory, art history, and philosophy.

The German Council of Science and Humanities certified the HfG's educational approach as "excellent" in 2008.

The HfG Research Institute, based on the model of anglo-saxon Institutes for Advanced Studies, gathers outstanding scientists and graduate researchers together under one roof where they can concentrate on independent research project and enter into exchange between the disciplinary boundaries. The 3D lab "Expanded 3 Digital Cinema Laboratory" focuses on the future of 3D television and cinema, for example.

The current chancellor is Professor Dr. Peter Sloterdijk.
